I got a pair from a defunct leather outfit known as Wilson Leather for under $60 quite a number of years ago. Get them long and you'll never regret it - they can always be shortened. Mine are light weight leather and roll up tight to fit in my hard bag. I never leave home without them (or my jacket).
They're perfect for those evening rides back to the house when the temp has dropped and Levis just aren't warm enough.
Yes it is but I'd rather have them an not need them than not have them
Boy I know that! I've left mine at home a few times when I should have worn them, like last Saturday when we went to Waco and it was misting. It didn't take long before the shins of my jeans to get soaked.
Bought mine almost 20 years ago and they're still going strong. From a place called California Leather Creations. Saw a pair on a rack at an H-D dealership, but didn't fit like I wanted. Gave them a call, they asked all the sizing questions, and sent me a custom-sized pair. Was so pleased, I had 'em make a pair for my wife as well. I can't recall exactly, but seem to think they were are $100 back then, and have been well worth the money. Thick leather that has withstood the test of time and elements.
Here's their web site - glad to see they're still around.
try them on in the store. the person waiting on you can show you how to put them on. The pair I bought needed the length shortened, so they instructed me in how to cut them off, making sure that they were long enough by measuring while I was sitting down, etc. I bought mine at a flea market in a leather shop in Florida of all places. Have worked fine for 10 years. They also make some that have a little of elastic in the thigh for the first time out after winter, until the fat is gone.
2 things I look for on chaps: pockets for wallet, keys, etc. and a thinner belt so I can take off jean belt and loop the chap belts in front. The jean belt buckle, no matter how small, always seem to be in the way. Do I wear the chaps above or below the jean belt? Problem solved.
Chaps = Cold Crotch. Dickies/Carhartt insulated bib overalls leaves no air gap at waist. Covered from ankles to chest/mid back. Easy on/off with ankle to knee zippers.
+1. Im runnin Duluth whale back over pants. I have a pair of Fox Creek chaps and some lined HD chaps but prefer the over pants.
I bought the FoxCreek deluxe lined insulated chaps. The only reason I paid top dollar for their chaps was because of the lifetime warranty. 5 years down the road, if something fails, they will fix it. Their customer service is outstanding too. I have yet to hear a bad review of anything foxcreek makes.
You can get cheap ones and as long as you take care of them, they should last too. I only wore mine a handful of times this winter. They aren't a daily wear item for me. I usually wear long johns under my levis and that works for me down to about 55 degrees for runs less than a couple of hours. If I am transitioning from day to night, the chaps go on. I just like knowing that the quality of my chaps is top notch and will last a lifetime...and I only have to buy them once. If you go the cheaper route, you may have to buy a new set every so often because of failed zippers and such. I think I paid around 340 for the deluxe lined chaps. If I purchased a pair of $50 chaps every 2 years, it would take 14 years before the fox creek made sense. The $50 chaps may last a lifetime for too. Lots of people on here have purchased cheapies and have lasted forever for them. As mentioned earlier, the insulated coveralls is another option. I see quite a few people wearing those too.
Good luck on your decision.
Oh and another thing about foxcreek, just call them with your measurements and they will make sure you get the right ones. If they are too small or too big, they will exchange them too. I ordered mine and 3 days later, they were on my doorstep.
I'll second Fox Creek. They're high quality and should last me forever. Also, I made a mistake on my size and they replaced them without question, sending the new size before I could even ship the wrong ones back. They also refunded me some because the smaller size was cheaper. All I had to pay was the shipping, which I was more than happy to do.
Great product, quality customer service. You can't beat that.
