don't get me wrong here . . .
I have no love for the people talking on cell phones while driving.
BUT it's not just that -

it's Eating
it's Drinking
it's Smoking
it's Reading
it's Putting on Makeup
it's Pointing out things to friends in the car
it's Looking at the kids in the backseat
And lets not forget lack of eyesight and motor functions (I live in FL)

Just plain not friggen paying attention to driving.
Which is why we have to assume everyone is Drunk, Stupid, Not paying attention, & a danger to us.

I firmly support heavy fines and even jailtime in instances of such NEGLIGENCE while driving.

I am with you 100% except for the part about cell phone use. Any cell phone use while driving should be banned. the Problem is that Cell Phones are such a major part of the economy in this country that the FEDS are never going to do anything about them. You will have to slug it out state by state. Studies have shown that it is not necessarily the handling of the phone that is the distraction, but the actual conversation. Hands free is not the answer. Of course most young teenagers learn their lesson about cell phone use over time, one death at a time.

you'd also have to ban radios, smoking, makeup, kids in the car etc. ain't no way to legislate responsibility and it's about damn time this country realized it.

on one hand, most want the goobermint out of our lives and on the other some want more laws.

makes no sense

I am a safety director for a very large transportation company and we have an internal policy that prohibits cell phone use in company vehicles, truck, cars, etc at ALL times, even for those that have a company car and on vacation, the phone is prohibited from being used. Its not the act of holding or dialing that is the issue, it is the fact that you "zone out", meaning you lose your peripheral vission and sense of being while concentrating on the conversation.

Dangerous act -talking on the phone, it should be prohibited by all states. Yes, I am against losing freddoms, but have nearly been taken out a few times by cell users.

Get caught using a cell phone while driving in the UK will cost you ÂŁ60 fine 3 penalty points on your licence (12 in three years and your banned for a year) and they are also discussing confiscating the phone !

Does it work ?

OFF COURSE NOT DRIVERS ARE STILL AT IT !

BAN THEM TOTALLY IN VEHICLES

I agree with everything you said. I also think there should be a heavy penalty for injuring or killing a biker. In most cases the driver just spouts out they didnt see the bike. That says to me that they were not looking, the bike was there and probably had a headlight shining. If someone causes a motorcycle accident they should get jail time. Period.

One of my pet peaves is seeing a driver with a dog sitting in their lap. What happens if the driver get in a tight spot and squeeses the dog, it will bite the driver and he could lose control of the car. Most people talk about cell phones, but never think about other distractions. We see drivers shaving, putting on make-up, singing, etc. We need to spend more time thinking about driving and less about other things. (yes, I'm guilty too)

We the people can't ban drunk drivers from our roads
in all the years we've been trying, so GOOD LUCK on
banning cell phones!!

We need to get a handle on DRUNK DRIVERS before we
can even be bothered worrying about CELL PHONES!

Most everyone I know that won't drink while riding
their motorcycles will get in their cars drunk and
drive at one time or another.

That is sad but it is a fact!

Most everyone I know that rides complains about
cell phone using car drivers and then when their
in their car they use their cell phones while driving.

That too is sad but it is a fact!

As motorcyclests and drivers our biggest enemy on
the road is drunk drivers, not cell phone drivers. The
reason there will never be an end to cell phone drivers
is the same reason there will never be an end to drunk
drivers and that is:

Most people drink and most of the people that drink
will drive drunk at one time or another. Most people
that have cell phones will use them in their car at one
time or another. There are so many people doing
these two things and are addicted to them both there
will never be an end to them. Even our law makes do
both drive drunk and use cell phones, so what do you
think their going to do? [:'(]

Sorry, but though a distraction problem, none of your list have ever been comparable to DUI, as cell phone usage HAS. So either you pull the gubmint off enforcingDUIlaws, or you add cell phone usage to the list. Whether you believe itor not, it IS studied fact that people on the phone are as bad as a drunk.

I do not want more gov't (they just f*** it up anyway), but if you are going to enforce one thing for its level of endangerment, then you MUST add others at the same level (or higher). To do anything else is moronic hypocrisy.

The only way people will stop using cell phone in a vehicle is for the manufactures to install a shield or jamming device in the car or truck. I hate cell phones. I have one but I do not give out my number. Why would someone want to be called anytime or any place. The only reason I have it is because it is cheaper that the landline. Hands free is not the answer. They are still distracted.

I use mine mostly as a landline phone. Even got a booster so the signal is clean in the house.
