I used to chain and lock 2 bikes together and cover with a nice Honda cover. I don't bother either anymore.
Now I park as close to the motel room as I can, get off the bike, turn the ignition off and leave. If someone wants the bike they are going to get it one way or another.
Cable and lock if staying overnight somewhere, wifes bike and mine toghther. The son is buying my sporty and has a bad habit of not locking the bars. Jumped his butt about it, went out the other mourning and there sat bike, not locked and key in switch. Go figure.
The only times I bother to lock the ignition and the forks is when it is parked overnight at a hotel or when it is parked for more than an hour in a questionable area of a major city (Boston, NYC, DC). Otherwise I never even bother with that. I never do more. It's never been messed with.
Thieves are generally cowards. I try to stay at mid-range hotels at least where cameras are visible or assumed, park in the brightest spot possible near high traffic areas. I've had no issues at all, but like someone else said, maybe my time is coming. It has come for everything else!
I’ve thought about a rotor lock or chain but figured I would forget I put it on and damage something when I moved the bike. Not sure what would **** me off more. Having the bike stolen or damaging it myself.

I know they can still steal it in no time, but i be dammed if i make it easy for them.
I heard a rumor some riders can make their bike fit through the door of a Motel 6.
Probably not a bagger though.
I had a friend who had an extreme case of OCD. He had a sweet custom FatBoy that he barely rode because he didn't want to get it dirty. He would trailer it to Myrtle Beach Bike Week and rent the adjacent room just for the bike. He didn't want the salt air to get on it at night.
