i currently ride an 07 flht and have owned 8 harleys in the past and numerous other bikes....i have over a quarter million miles on the road and always wear a full face helmet....the problem is, that my schubert concept high tech helmet doesnt like the turbulance coming over my windshield on this bike and is almost intollerable while riding....the stock windshild was too tall and i would look thru its distortion, so i cut it down 2 inches at a time, until it was gone only making the problem worse....so i bought an 8 inch clearview wind shield with the lip, and its no better....now i have ordered a cee bailey 9 inch shield and waiting on delivery....my bank account is dwindling fast....
so i rode the bike with a half helmet todayand most of the buffeting is gone....the schuberth helmet was big bucks, but i will part with it gladly, if i can find a helmet that doesnt buffet in the wind....as a state trooper, i saw too many crashes with faceless riders, so losing the full face, is not an option and i wont ride without one....i can go broke real quick buying helmets, so im open to suggestions....anyone else have this problem and solve it?
Question might be is the wind coming over the top of the windshield or up from the bottom? On your next ride put your left forearm across the front of you chest and move it about a little bit. See if this changes the turbulance problem. You might want to invest in a pair of lowers, on the fork tubes, below the windshield.
i did, its definately coming over the top of the shield....the schuberth also has an air scoop in the top that catches air, so i put a piece of tape over it to resculpt the airflow, to no avail...ive already installed a factory wind baffle on the forks....most places that ive been, wont let you ride test their helmets.....
If this is the windshield you ordered http://www.ceebaileys.com/harley/flhtssc_ws.html then you might be okay, I know that these solve the buffeting problem for most people on the Honda ST1300. The biggest problem is picking the right height, an inch too low, and you've wasted your money.
Did you try one of those windsheilds that have a small lip at the top? It curves upwards and directs the wind higher up over your head. I dont remember the name of the company that makes them but I have seen alot of posts on this site where people talk about them. Im sure someone here knows what Im talking about. Can someone post a link please?
IMHO the problem isn't the windshield, it's the helmet, as you discovered when you tried a different helmet.
I have an 06 Heritage Classic. The windshield was too high--I like to look over rather than through--so I bought a CeeBaileys -2 inch replacement shield. So far so good. I then bought a Shoei X-11 helmet, which everyone wil agree is a great helmet. Except on this bike, it was unbearably noisy and there was also quite a bit of buffeting. I knew where the noise was coming from--the fancy front vents--but there was no cure.
I returned the Shoei and then bought an HJC AC-12 Carbon helmet online (branded by H-D as the FXRG helmet), and poof! No wind noise, no buffeting, plus it's lighter than many half helmets and a pleasure to wear.
I suggest you try a different helmet. I bought the AC-12 Carbon on eBay here for $274. The seller is very responsive to email; check his approval ratings. If you prefer, you can pay HD $450 for the same helmet
I suffer from the very same problem, added the fork baffle, fork mounted air deflectors, fairing air deflectors, changed the windshield height ,still had the bobble head feeling and the loud wind noise,my head shakes so much everything is double vision and my glasses slip down my nose,I have a shoei RF-1000.
Ended up with a 9.5" light tint HD windshield and a half helmet to get rid of the turblance and noise. I've yet to resolve this problem wearing the full face helmet.Half helmet until i can find a cure for this problem.
It may be the helmet. I used a Schuberth for several years with no problem until I rode a friend's bike home from the shop. It had a windshield set at the perfect level to see over. The Schuberth vibrated badly and I had place my hand on the top of the helmet just to read the road signs. The Schuberth was always fine with no windshield.
