Honestly, I'm not sure if I would ride with that friend again. He clearly wasn't paying attention. It's one thing when a rider's lack of attention just affects him, but when it starts to involve other riders, it's a real problem, IMO.

My thoughts to. It's happend to me in my pickup a few times. There is a pause between shifting and most people with automatics don't know this because they never learned how to drive one. Distance is our best friend.

You should have stopped, put the kickstand down, fell down and hollered "whiplash!" People in cars use the "whiplash" gimmick all of the time.

I commute on my bike into downtown St. Louis. Right as I get downtown there are two lanes to turn left and of those two lanes I need to be in the one on the right. Unfortunately that lane also allows for people to go straight and they aren't too far from the interstate so people come in fast in those lanes a lot. The left turn lights are sometimes red while the lanes to the right are green. So one day I'm sitting there and hear squealing tires, and look into my mirrors to see an F150 behind me with his breaks locked and barreling down on me. I was in first gear and had time to take off so I didn't get smashed. I never stop at that red light anymore if no one is in front of me. Of course right now its all under heavy construction so it is down to one lane.

Ugh. . .that is a sickening sound to hear squealing tires behind you when you're stopped.

What really sucks is when you hear that happen on a highway and traffic all around you is stopped but you can't see who's locked up behind you.

To the OP, damn glad you lived through this. Don't even need to exaggerate the danger here. That sumnobich flat ran you over. I would have gone ballistic. At a minimum get the bike detailed on his bill and take a hammer to his phone, just a big bet that his phone played into this. I teach CMV driving for buses. One of the things we teach is a delayed acceleration at intersections. Why would anyone in their right mind haul *** right into a bike that was moments ago right in front of them. Unreal but so realistic.

Another thing that freaks me out, we've got right on red here. The people that start out from the side road as your approaching so they can fall in behind you.
I never know if they see me or not. I've been using the horn a lot more lately.
