I was sitting at a red light this morning, as it turned green I took off and about half way through the intersection I got a little boost… I was thinking what the crap was that, when I checked my mirrors, there was a Toyota 4runner a bit close came to the conclusion that he had hit me. I pulled over, he pulled over… He got out asking if I was ok, and then said, oh no I hit a freaking Harley… I’ve had my bike for a month. There was a scuff mark on the tour pack, brake light I was able to buff out on the spot, and I can’t find any damage at all. He gave me his card and told me to call him if there was anything wrong with it. I think because I was moving, it was more of a push than and impact.
So looking back we were both stopped at the light, he must have been to close when we took off from the light or he didn't wait for me to get very far before he started. How do you avoid incidents like this. I’ve been riding for 4 years now 30,000 miles, and this is the first incident on my bike.

Just have to stay alert and I guess one more reason to not put your bike in neutral at a red light, even though I do it occasionally. I had a pickup truck kiss my left soft bag with his right front bumper. He was changing lanes to the right as I was passing him and I was in his blind spot sort of. At the last second he saw me and swerved left and at the same time I swerved right. We both stopped and I was going to kick his *** until he got out, huge muscular dude. He was very apologetic, offered all his info, asked if I was ok, really nice guy. No damage, I was able to wipe off the mud from his bumper and no scratches. Been riding 44 years and that's the worst thing that's happened to me. Just have to keep your head on a swivel and be defensive, twice as defensive when 2 up.
I always ride offset in the far left wheel side of the lane. Less likely for cages to hit me from behind.
4Runner dude was likely texting while waiting for the light to change.
Eyes down on the lap while stopped at a light is a clue. Eyeballing stopped drivers behind you through your mirrors will also give you warning.

Were you shifting into second? Some times I'll be a little nonchalant with shifting and there will be a slight pause in accelerating. Not trying to put the blame on anywhere other than where it belongs, the guy driving too close to begin with. Just thinking out loud...or typing quietly?

This is what I was thinking too. Happens to me sometimes, especially on the sportbike when I'm shifting slow and/or lazy so my acceleration isn't constant. Worse is when I miss the shift and don't notice until I've let out the clutch and then actually decelerate the bike a little. I'm sure guy was probably too close to you and/or distracted regardless of what was happening on your end.
I don't remember I may have been shifting, but I usually accelerate fairly quickly. I know he was there behind me stopped at the light, so it wasn't that he was just cruising through the light. He must have been really on it, and not waited at all at the light for me to take off. I was about half way through the intersection when it happened, so it may have been when I hit the clutch to shift.
I was pretty nervous on my way home today... I had a girl run a stop sign and stop right in front of me right in my lane as she realized what she had done, no stop sign coming from my direction. I saw this one coming and stopped in plenty of time... I guess I'm just having a bad day or something.

Don't settle for a business card as contact info. My in-laws lived on a golf course and golfers always gave cards when they broke windows. A few times they were somebody else's cards. Glad you're okay.

Nope, you're having a pretty good day. Your good riding awareness will keep you alive. You saw the girl because you were on your toes. Way to go!
