Have you noticed you reaction time slowing? Your unease could be a result of being suprized more times due to less anticipation of road hazards. I know even at 35 I have seen a slight degredation of my ability to focus as sharply as I did whenI was 20. It does ratchet my tension up at times.
I am always very relaxed, when I ride. I still am aware that every cager out there, is going to do their best to ruin my day.
The worst thing you can do, is ride a bike or drive a car fast, when you are tensed up. It slows your reflexes down considerably. I use to drive my car, several times a year, from Wichita,KS to Vegas about 1,175 miles each way. The wife and I would leave from work and drive through the night at a very fast clip. We would stay 3 days, then drive back. When I got there my hands, neck and shoulders would be all knotted up from holding the wheel too tight and straining to see what was ahead in the darkness. After just a few of those trips I trained myself to stay relaxed.
So next time you ride and feel your self tensing up, think about how all you are doing is slowing down your reaction time, in case you do have to make some sudden moves. You can still stay alert without tensing up.

you guys know what a DRZ-400 is? that is what i ride in traffic or during peak rush hour. i do not care how bad the traffic is i get around it. and if i can't get around it i'll ride OVER IT. no joke.
the Soft Tail comes out when i know the thick traffic will be a minimum. i anm not hapy in traffic. you shoul dsee me in a cage in traffic. maybe you should NOT see me in a cage in traffic. not pretty.
Every time I get into traffic....I find myself,,,grinding my teeth and squeezing the handlebars...
Anybody else? or is it just me?
get more high traffic miles under your belt, and be able to be alert without being tense. it takes time and miles. you say you have been riding a long time, but riding in heavy traffic is a separate skill.
