Many states require a money transaction for the title to change hands, and $1.00 in the minimum they allow.

Correct. A family friend inherited it and just wanted it gone. Legally she could not give the estate away. She said $1, I said deal. She also had a 1960s Mercedes but I don't have the money or the time.

Fantastic, enjoy the rebuild. Wish I had your skill level with being able to rebuild a bike!

Thanks but honestly I have no skill or experience with bikes. I've never owned one before this month. I'm a truck guy. This was just too good to pass up. Although I do love to tinker. I figure I will learn as I go. The bike is from the 80s how complex can it be?!

You got the first year (of only two) for the FXR/ shovelhead combo. They weren't real popular when they came out, but today they seem to be regarded as the Holy Grail of Harleys. Take your time and do it up right. That bike represents one of the biggest changes Harley ever made.

Since you've never been into one before, just a suggestion about that simple old bike - read the manual carefully about each thing you do (you can get digital (pdf format) cheap on Amazon, ebay, other sites too), and there's youtube videos on everything from oil changes to replacing everything in the primary, plus a wealth of tips on this forum. There are some things you need to know, like how to brace the clutch without cracking the transmission housing when installing the big clutch nut (which is left hand thread... or was that the compensator nut...). If you're competent on trucks, the Harley shouldn't have any tool related expertise you can't handle (might need to get a few specialty tools). There's a few bigger bolts that should get red loctite, but most should only be blue - so you can get them off again. If it has a cotter pin, I use anti-seize, but just about everything else I loctite. They do vibrate a bit...

Lot of different opinions on this, I use torque wrenches. After nearly 40 years wrenching on aircraft, I think I have a pretty good feel, but go without one long enough and you're likely to strip one of those low torque case screws, could probably strip one with a handheld screwdriver. I have 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" torque wrenches to cover all the values properly.

What's the mileage on your bike; if you posted it, I missed it.

FYI: Probably not a lot of them around anymore. The more original you keep it the more it's worth.

Nothing complicated about them. I just learn as I go and I've never needed a mechanic for anything.
