I have a 2009 Ultra Classic and I recently had a problem where the throttle suddenly quit working in the middle of a ride. I had to pull over to the side of the road and after about 20 minutes the throttle started working again.
Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so, what the fix is?
On my 2009 with the tbw it was happening at least once a year , the way around it at the side of the road is to cycle on - off -on - off the power switch 3 times . The fix that I now redo every second oil change is when I clean the air filter I pull the plug from the throttle body and clean it with electrical contact cleaner , the spray type , and then apply dielectric grease into the connector . It's been working good for over a year this way
Limp mode. It is when the throttle grip potentiometer and the throttle body don't read the same resistance (the ECM reads them about 256 times a second) the ECM drops the rpm to 1500-ish , tops. It thinks the grip and the throttle body are doing different things. Limp mode is a fail save mode on all TBW- even cars. Error codes won't read out this problem. Turning off the engine and waiting about 20-30 seconds should reset the ECM. As stated, the cause is usually a small amount of corrosion on the contact pins in the throttle body cable from the grip. Mine went from once every now and then to once/twice a day. Changing to contacts or just spraying the contacts should do it but my dealer changed out the grip, cable and connector and contacts.
we brown...warranty or did you pay? just wondering how much that part is? I have an 09 and knock on wood, no problems as of yet. but I do put dielectric grease on the connector when I service my bike
