While stationed in Japan I used a Yamaha 50cc scooter to commute to base. Lane splitting is the norm and no matter what traffic was like I could get to the ship in 20 min vice the 45+ min it would take a car. Not to mention the ease of finding a parking space on the water front.
On the flip side. You were required to take the MSF course which is fine, but when you are on a scooter and the other 19 riders are on Harleys it really sucks. [&o]

Colorado has the same cc limits (under 50) doesn't require a license. What you have to watch out for is that if traffic slows then the moped riders often ride onto the sidewalk and then jump back into traffic when ever they please. Gotta keep your eyes open for them. Not sure that is legal but someone told me that since they are not technically classified as motor vehicles then they are not required to stay on the roads.
