Hey y'll. I have had my 1985 evo flhtc for about 2 months now and hear a noise in the front of the motor on the right side. It sounds like play in the lifters or something. The thing is I hear the same noise on my 2003 flhtchu/I. I have it about two weeks. The noise is the same just not as loud in the 03. It may be the way Harleys sound being these are my first. I run 20w50 synthetic screaming eagle in the 85 and dyno 20w50 in 03. Any ideas and if I am just looking for problems than just say so because I am good for that!:icon Thanks!
sounds like a clicking noise. It only makes it when the throttle is open on both bikes. If I have the clutch or idling it goes away. It seems to do it a bit louder after I have been riding for 10 15 mins.
Front lifter tic is common on the evos, if it has adjustable pushrods adjust them out a 1/4 to 1/2 turn more and see how it sounds. Twinkies make noise , just the way they are.

How many miles on the bike? If it doesn't have adjustable pushrods, the lifters should not be ticking. Evo's need the lifters inspected/swapped every 20k.
Two options... you can either remove the rocker gear and go back with stock pushrods, or you can clip the stock pushrods with a bolt cutter and go back in with adjustables. No need to remove the heads and jugs unless you want to. If you have a lifter ticking, and it has 64,000 miles, I'd pull the lifters out and open up the cam chest to make sure everything is ok in there. My evo is as quiet as a church mouse.
nice will look into that and get back to ya. Is that a push and pull job either way or do I need a professional with professional tools. I have set of mechanic tools.
