Yes, just for the towing service alone if you break down. Plus you get great maps, including a listing of all dealers. I ground my shifter off last year, in a state where I knew no-one, and was able to look up a dealer location to limp into for new parts. Got going, a t-shirt, and a smile.
I enjoy HOG. Have been a member for 11 years. We have a pretty good chapter here, plus I have enjoyed several state and national events. As far as the membership being worth the money, I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I enjoy the company of other HOG members, I like the pins, patches, touring guide and map, Hog Tails magazine, etc. For me it is worth it. For others it might not be.
Yeah, the tow service is worth it alone... Anyone in the Kansas City chapters? I havent talked to anyone locally yet. I like the patches and pins also... I can start a vest...
I think a lot of folks are members of the HOG chapters but how involved you are depends on how you personally feel about the with rides and events the chapter participates in. However, some dealerships offer discounts to HOG members so that could be worth the annual fee. I'd just check out the local chapter and see what they are up to.
My nearest HOG chapter is over 100 miles away at the dealer where I bought my bike, so I don't think it would be worth paying the extra for chapter membership, but I'll probably renew my membership when it runs out for the roadside assistance and eligibility for HOG events.
I dropped my membership in the Harley Owners Group for the simple reason that it really was not doing anything for me. I enjoyed the Enthusiast Magazine, but that was just about it. As far as the towing, I have that through my motorcycle insurance company. I was a member of a HOG chapter for two years, but lost interest because I did not get much of a charge out of the comraderie.
My $.02.
