Default 103 Winter build direction

Mine is an air cooled version, and I'm balancing increased efficiency with reliability. The cam will be the new SE-585; it's going into a bagger and I want the low range torque.

My quandary is whether porting or replacing heads provides justifiable returns in performance, or not.

Won't be replacing pistons as I don't want the problems associated with higher pressures. Any piston/jug work will wait until I'm closer to the 80K mark and do a teardown and inspection.

Anyone out there with experience on this? Don't want to spend money needlessly, although the wife would say I'm quite good at doing just that...

What is the recommended compression for the cams you have in mind? That right there will answer if you need to have work done on your heads. If the heads are off and at the machine shop to be decked for proper compression you might as well have some port/valve work done to increase flow. Get it all out of the way at once so you don't have to mess with them down the road and you get the most out of your new cams!

Your performance money is best spent in the heads! Harley has choked them down to meet EPA standards and opening up the ports/increased valve size will make a "seat of the pants" difference in performance. I would talk to Andrew at Revolution Performance or check out their dyno charts to get more info. Also I'm a big fan of Feuling cams and have had great luck with all their products.

Give TR from Tman or Jamie from fuel Moto a call. They are both great to deal with and will steer you in the right direction. There are so many better cams out there than the HD stuff.
