I did a search and didn't find the answer. I'm sure this has come up before so, I apologize, but I need to know.
I just purchased an '06 Ultra Classic.
I was told that the twin cam motors, prior to '06, had an issue with the spring cam chain tensioner. I was told that they could wear out early and cause the cam chain to destruct.
I've also heard that there is an upgrade to a hydraulic tensioner.
First: Is this really a problem?
Second: If it's a problem, will just replacing the plastic tensioner pad be enough?
Third: Is it worth it to upgrade to the hydraulic tensioner and new oil pump?

This has been discussed ad infinitum. How many miles on your bike? It usually isn't a problem until 30k. My dealer will inspect them for $125, then put that towards replacement, of you need them. Some guys replace them, some upgrade to the SE Hydraulic, some go to gear drive.
If you plan on keeping your bike, and have 30k do an upgrade. Did you have a mechanic inspect your bike? There are other issues like engine mounts, caliper rebuilds, depending on mileage, and previous maintenance.
Thanks for the info. A mechanic had looked at the bike, but I don't know if he specifically looked for this issue. Inspecting the cam tensioner pads should only take a few minutes
The bike has about 32k on it so, I will definitely look into this
Or you can do the complete cam chest upgrade.......but it's spendy.....about $500 in parts and another couple hundred min in labor. If you aren't putting a ton of miles on the bike or you're a casual rider you may want to consider just replacing the pads if they're worn or just inspecting them every 5-10k miles.
