I have an 88 softail in stock form have replaced the original starter with a stock replacement style motor sometimes during cranking the the starter will stall and the oil filler cap will actually pop off the tank one time it actually popped off and shot hot oil on the inside of my leg (ouch)has anyone encountered this condition before and I would like to hear any suggestions for a remedy
I have starter stalling issues when the battery gets weak. So make sure you have a good fully charged battery. Also did you replace the battery cables when you changed out the starter?
If the oil cap pops off I would assume there's too much oil in the tank. I usually run about 2.5 quarts in mine.
I've installed new cables,a new big boar battery fully charged but this happens intermittantly and I'm concerned that case pressure may be feeding back into the oil tank which is not supposed to happen,is it possible that I may have a breather problem(the original plastic breather gear is still installed)
Is your Evo still stock or modified (ie, bigger displacement or higher compression)?
From my understanding the stock starters on early Evo's are marginal at best. Going to the later Evo starter with the gear reduction solves most of the issues.
i have a 88 softail with a s&s 113 engine i can get it started when its cold with out a battery charger. i have replaced my starter with a 1.4 kw starter, battery, battery cabels, i took the primary mounted selinoid and replaced the with a lever mechenism i bought out of a catolog, i put decompression buttons in the heads. when i go to start the bike the starter can turn the engine over good but the enging has so much compression that the starter cannot turn the engine over enough to start. any suggestions on what to do about this problem would be greatly apprieated.
has any one ever put a primary and starter for a newer 90-94softail on a 86-88 softail that has the selinoid mounted on the primary? i think a newer style starter might be able to start my hi compression engine.

This is an `88 model year Softail, the starter configuration is like the shovelhead system.
The only way an `89 or later starter can be used on this bike is to change the inner primary cover and either modify the transmission case to accept the later model starter, or change the transmission case to an `89 or later.
Make sure ignition timing is correct and voes is operating properly.
