Do yourself a favor, spend $60 on a factory service manual, it will save you a lot money in the long run. Elect diagnostic and parts manual are really helpful as well.
What year bike / model do you have? You can't blow a coil by sparking wires.. You might it you let 12v sit across it for a long period of time.. Split tanks implies an EVO or earlier..
put down the tools and step away ! get your owners manual out and see where your fuses are located and which one is the main. remove and replace. if you can change a light blub you should be able to handle this.
