Back in WWII they used to add water injection to fighter air craft to get them to make more power. Were they wrong?
No they were not wrong. It was a mixture of alcohol and water and was used to prevent detonation and keeping the hi octane aviation fuel from burning too quickly.

on my dodge 440, i ran a holley water injection unit and in the winter, ran rubbing alcohol so it would not freeze. combustion chambers had no build up and detonation/ping gone.
when bell came out with the long ranger 206, they ran an injection unit to increase power for take off's, lord knows why when they should have increased turbine size which they did on the II's. with the injection, the TOT's was reduced so more fuel could be added.
water is still a good way to de-carbon cylinders.
Using a little water spray in the intake throat is an old method to de-carbon motors. BUT, it is totally different from mixing water and gasoline and expecting to have it cool the combustion chamber to prevent detonation. Ethanol was a political pay-off to get the votes of the mid-west farmers.
who would do a lame thing like that, IT will not mix, like oil and vinegar.
ethanol is fine IF the engine is made for it. it is in a solvent class and will mix with gasoline, water isn't, hence direct injection via INDUCTION and not fuel.
the holley system would only inject if the temperature was permissive and the load was heavy via manifold pressure switch. it had shower nozzles above the 4 bangers.
