General Topics/Tech TipsDiscussion on break in periods, rider comfort, seats and pad suggestions. Tech tips as they become available will be posted here.
Hello everyone, got a question (several actually). Just bought my first harley. 1966 sportster 900 xlch. As you may know, this thing is kick start only. Well, I'm waiting on a sprocket cover to come in because mine is broken (was when I got it) which is apparently common. I can see why. Anyway, I was attempting to push start the bike because I have not yet seen it run. Well, in neutral the bike free wheels super easy like I'm used to on other bikes. But when in 2nd gear (or any gear) while holding the clutch in, the bike has a lot of resistance making it was harder for me to push fast enough to get a pop. Is this normal, or should I be looking into adjustments? And yes guys I know I need a manual, I'm looking for one-any suggestions?
Hard to say if you have an issue with the clutch. They will drag when the bike is cold and parts ain't spinning.. At your own risk, get someone to push or find a big hill. Start off in neutral. Get up to speed. Fan the clutch while dropping it into 2nd gear and your *** on the seat.. Get ready to pull the clutch in if she lights off.
Right on man, I actually got the service and parts manuals today. Guy I got it from swears to be damned it runs flawless but the sprocket case broke. I'm gonna find a good isolated place to pop her off tomorrow. I'm familiar with the process, was just curious about that dragging sensation. I'll post to let know how it goes. Not my first rodeo, just my first with a harley.

Add: I don't know how much it is actually dragging but if concerned. pull it apart and clean..
BTW It's also common for these to blow out the lower left part of the case where the layshaft runs and the kick start gears will get you sportster knee..
