General Topics/Tech TipsDiscussion on break in periods, rider comfort, seats and pad suggestions. Tech tips as they become available will be posted here.
I have a 2008 Sportster (EFI) and bought a combo digital Speedo/analog teach (part #70900274). After learning that my bike needed a separate fuel sensor to take advantage of the gas level & MTE features, I purchased it (part #61200008). I had more $ than time, so reluctantly I took it to my local dealer. After that the fuel gauge didn't work. Highly trained HD techs couldn't figure out why. They said it was probably the Speedo was bad (which I bought there & installed myself) & had to replace at the charge of a new Speedo ($300). I said screw that & after looking threw a bunch of different manuals figured out that the "highly trained techs" forgot to set the tank size & it defaulted at 4 or 5 gal tank. I have the 3.3 gal tank. And plus, just to add I'm new to wrenching myself
Now I can't figure out why (or better yet, correct) when my tank gets 1/2 empty, the gauge level goes up. It has 4 blocks, goes down to 2 & then goes up. So when I hit full, I run out of gas. In back to using my tripometer for my gas gauge. And I know what you may say, take it back to the stealership, but 1) I refuse to, 2) they couldn't figure out the original issue, 3) they dealer was just bought out & is under new ownership, who are dicks & don't recognize the thousands of $ I spent in parts & gear with the previous owners.
Please help me solve this.

As a fairly simply check it might be worth looking at where the fuel sensor resistor used to be and should have been removed and replaced by a jumper wire when the new sensor kit was installed.
You'll find it under the left side panel up in the top right corner of the oil tank just under the frame rail.
The jumper wire needs to be installed in the correct terminal locations. Pin numbers 1 & 2.
Here's a link to the install instructions for the sensor kit.
