Default Softail suspension set up direction

I Have soft tail [ 2008 Night Train ] which has been lowered by 2” by the previous owner. I want to put in longer miles and want to replace shocks with something more comfortable while trying to keep the dropped "look". I am thinking a 1” drop. Where can a guy go to get the right technical merits and direction to make the right decision in choosing the right shock over another?

Keep in mind that to lower a Softail means the shock is longer. You ought to look under there and see what he has done. If he added those lengthen bolts, throw that junk away. Mine is 1" lower but it has and SE OEM shock with the length built into it. I also also ride one up and have the shock rebound tensioner set to the softest position. I'm 190lbs. Probably could have had 2-3 turns in the pre-load it a bit more since I can bottom it. What happens when you go two inches is you are almost on bump stop. Also, Harley says to keep it level. They have SE spring for the front that are shorter but have closer coils to keep load capacity the same. However, 1" drop in back and none in the front does not seem to affect handling on my 04. However, I drive very conservative.

Progressive 422's are really good and decently priced shocks for softails. They come set 1" lower than stock so all you need to do is bolt them on and set the preload for your weight...

The least expensive but quality way to get what you want is the 422s as mentioned above.
