Default Lathe for truing flywheels??

Was looking at getting a flywheel truing stand and got thinking, "why can't I true flywheels on a lathe between live centers with a couple dial indicators for runout?"

You can. My friend was a top notch HD mechanic (deceased) he balanced, trued, and lightened flywheels on a lathe.

While you can cut a flywheel on a lathe to lighten or "true" it up, you don't want to leave the finish as a lathe would (directional finish)! Your final flywheel surface should be a non directional pattern such as one left by grinding!

What finish are you talking about?

While I have used a lathe to check runout, I don't true in the lathe. Don't want to beat on the lathe. Usually pull the wheels out to check beat on them.. Not sure how you balance in a lathe. Always used a balancing fixture..

Used to cut the heavy sides on pans and shovels then re-balance the halves.. I've only done pans shovels and knucks.

Here is a pic of the a balance checking fixture I did for twincams..

Cuz you don't own a 4 1/2 inch angle grinder with some 60 grit flap disks?
