Default Question about Engine Number

Newby question: Does the engine # match the serial # on late model bikes? Reason for asking is case halves have 2 different #s. The left side # (on a pad in the Vee) matches the VIN but the right side # is totally different.
Thanks

Any other info such as one owner, third owner, engine rebuilt in some crack heads basement? Seems to me the engine numbers would match each other at least.

Reasonable assumption tiger81, but after visiting 2 dealerships while chasing parts I looked at several new engines and indeed, the left side case # matches the last 5 or 6 digits in the VIN; the right side # does not match the left.
Mystery solved... breathing a sigh of relief.
