Default engine number question

hi.
I have just bought a 2001 fxdx, realy enjoying the new bike.
when looking over the bike prior to paying I did the usual checks including making sure the documents match the vin nos on the bike.
also made sure the vin no on the frame matched the no stamped on the left side of the engine below the cylinders.
what I have just found is that there is another no stamped on the other side of the engine(right side) towards the front, my question is should this no match the other nos, I have been told this is an engine no and dosent match the vin no.
please help me out with this as i am now not sure if my cases are a matched pair.
thanks steve.

Steve,

You're not going to have the same 17 digit VIN that is stamped on the neck of your frame on your engine case. The engine number that is stamped on the left case at the base of the cylinders is an abbreviated number that will contain 4 letters, and the six digit sequential number at the end of your VIN.

Example: VIN from a 1993 FXRS-CON: 1HD1EML19PY123456 (stamped on frame neck).

The corresponding engine number would be: EMPL123456 (stamped on eng case).

Make sense?

The number on the left is the abbreviated VIN, the one on the right that's on the lower part of the crank case is the crank case ID.

Steve
I looked at the fxdxi mumbers last night. 17digit on neck, c cases had the last 6 numbers but the code ref was in front of the 6 numbers. Not sure what my grw ref is may be it's a euro model not a home market. Looked it up in my book once but can not lay my hands on it.
