Default Push Button Gas Door Help?

Hi. I just recently bought a 2003 Electra and the PO installed a push button gas door on it. And today I went to open it for the first time and it wouldnt open. The button pushed down but the lid didnt spring up. Luckily, I was able to use a knife and gently lift it up.

I took some pics. I dont see any sort of spring or anything. Whats going on here? Thanks!

The end pieces of the hinge act as the spring. I would first make sure the push button latch moves freely when open and pressed, maybe add some grease as needed. When door is pressed closed, you should feel tension from spring just prior to latch contacting. If not, bend tabs closer to contact points

Thanks for the reply. So what do I bend? I found the old lock in a box of parts and put it back on until I can figure this out.

Throw that push button assembly as far as you can. They are worthless as a replacement.
While I could never figure why they have a locking cap on the touring bikes, it is more reliable than the push button.
Do you know many times one can slam one shut while they are riding to Sturgis? The don't latch or unlatch easily...Toss it.

The end pieces, maybe a couple mm in the direction of the arrow. Mines been on since purchase, may take a little work to adjust but love mine.

Grab it from the bottom in this pic where it says go with some needle nose pliers, bend it up 1/8" or so. Do the same on the other side.

This happened to me and lubing the button fixed it. I took off the big nut underneath the cover holding the button on and removed it. I sprayed lots of WD-40 into it and reassembled. No problems since.

This absolutely worked on my 2018 Road Glide! No more sticking fuel door. I also lubed the button assy with some graphite lube made for locks.

My 2012 has a similar push button. I haven’t had any problems but I will lube it when the 3 in 1 dry lube I just ordered for my barrel locks arrives.
3-IN-ONE Lock Dry Lube, 2.5 OZ
