Lookin for advice
i had a primary oil change done and topped up the engine oil. Rode the bike for a couple weeks and i guess it burned through the oil faster than i thought , pllus some leakage..anyway im on the way to work and it just turned itself off..check the oil and it was really low
now i cant get it to start. It tries to start but wont. Any advice would be helpful thank you..i hope it aint too ****ed
buy a inline spark tester and see if you have fire at the plug, easiest test. if you do move to fuel. your machine has a vacuum operated petcock with a hose running to the manifold, this must be good. to test, pull inlet fuel to carb hose off and into a catch can, apply vacuum to petcock, fuel should freely flow out, if it is not so great, check screen inside the tank by pulling the petcock out once there is no fuel in the tank.
on newer machines, they do have safety lock outs so check your print for things like clutch sw, stand sw and etc.
check your plugs, if excess oil, it will be oily slick or crusty black, your exh pipe will end will have smudge black residue. if the plugs are not as this, oil burn is not an issue yet. your machine has valve stem seals and with the age, could be not so great. that said, if the umbrella valves in the heads are bad, you can have excess c/c pressure and increase oil burn and if there is a leak, will be more pronounced.
a good sportster only forum would be the xlforum. great bunch of guys there.
