Default 97 ultra classic speedometer issue

I'm hoping someone can help me, friday when I was on my way to bike week in Muskegon mi I was doing 80mph and all of the sudden speedometer went to zero and then when we were on our way home the speedometer said I was doing 30 or 35 mph when I know I was doing 80mph and I only know that because I was riding in a group but then yesterday I checked the cable to see if it was unhooked and it wasn't so I took it for a ride and the speedometer doesn't work at all now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you check to see if the cable was broken inside the cable housing. I think the inner cable comes out from the outer housing from the speedometer end.

My 99 Road King has similar issues. My research said there may be a build op of metal shavings on the puck up inside the engine case. Remove the torx (or hex?) fastener and clean the shavings off the speedo pick up sensor.

BUMP. Cleaned a pile of metal shavings off my speedo pickup. Issue continues. Ideas? I hate to throw parts at something hoping its the problem but don't know how to trouble shoot the pickup.

Default Thanks for everyone's help

I finally figured it out, It ended up being the cable head some how it looked stripped so I used a file and filed the sides of Speedo cable and then made sure it fit right and drove it and it worked.
