This has been bugging me, then I read the same stuff here. Straighten me out.
I sent the wife to the starlership last week, needed some gaskets, I gave her the part numbers. While she's there were talking, I said get a oil filter for the 05 Sportster, the lady behind the counter asked " what size motor?"
then this morning I was reading a post about a Sportster seat, and a member asked 883 or 1200?
I think this is equivalent to the autozone employee asking "4x4??" when shopping for windshield wipers or spark plugs kinda thing... he is insinuating the oil filter is the same on both the 883 and 1200 but i cannot say one way or the other as i have never owned a sporty or done any work on one.
back in the day, parts dudes or dudettes, knew their parts and engines, now not so much. some places, if you do not have certain info, they becomes **** on a bore hog. awhile back, i was in a sears parts outlet and a uneducated man came in with a worn out wheel for a push mower. the parts dude refused to help him, geez, he had the wheel, wouldn't take much effort to match it, i held myself back because i wanted to jump the counter.
Is it; "Are there two different sized engines in current Sportsters?"
Yes, 883cc and 1200cc
the question is doesn't 883 and 1200 use the same filter. Seems like they would. Also seems like someone selling filters for a living would already be familiar with it.

The lady behind the counter was probably ensuring you received the correct filter. When you do a part search, you can't simply key in 05 Sportster. You have to be more specific to arrive at the correct part #. Yes, an experienced parts person could have simply asked: chrome, or black?

They do.
Parts people in an HD dealership are generally only knowledgeable about how to look up a part (ie year & model). But, they probably are instructed to look up parts this way because they've been dinged handing someone's wife the part they asked for and it was wrong. Not the wrong in the sense of different than what was asked for, wrong as in the dude who provided the part number didn't know as much as he thought he did.
(I'm NOT saying this is the case, only that it probably saves them grief.)
