Default Mystery question

I recently purchased [new] and installed the Combination Analog Speedometer/Tachometer [Part No. # 70900070B] on my 2006 Softail standard. If I'm reading the instructions correctly 2007 and earlier vehicles do not support the gear indicator function. Yet, my 2006 is displaying it and doing so correctly... Why? That's the mystery, it's not supposed to.

Notice the bottom line? This is one strange mystery, any ideas why my 06 gear function display is working? According to HD literature this is not possible.

So you are saying your 2006 has the same speedo and it displays which gear you are in?

Yes, I can't explain it? According to Harley-Davidson literature it says: "2007 and earlier vehicles do NOT support the gear indicator function"

And by the way the bike in the video is mine.

Does it have a different ECU or is it stock? IIRC the info come out of the ECU.

Also are the gears correct?

Everything is stock, no downloads or anything.

Well, I would guess that if you bought it new, they might have added the feature and have not updated the documentation since the tach/speedo gets both RPMs and Speed. It can use the VIN number to figure out gearing.

One would think if this was a new feature HD Parts website would indicate it as such. Just a thought but maybe they've all been able to do this from the beginning and everyone just took it as gospel that they couldn't? I think owners of pre-08 bikes who've also installed this instrument cluster should see if theirs does the same.

I think it really boils down to when HD connected the J1850 bus from the ECM, TSM/TSSM to the speedometer. IIRC it was 2006 when HD did a bunch of upgrades to the EFI and started programming the ECU, TSSM, and Speedo with the motorcycles vin number. I think this was the year they added J1850 to the Speedo. I know that the 2002 bikes did not have the vin number programmed. Also they did not have the J1850 bus going to the speedometer.
