I think this was the year they added J1850 to the Speedo. I know that the 2002 bikes did not have the vin number programmed. Also they did not have the J1850 bus going to the speedometer.
Okay, Thanks... You might well be correct? Mystery's like this bug the crap out of me and I appreciate you taking the time to reply. If what you say is true then presumably there are some 2006 & 2007's where this gear selector might function with said gauge? This adds weight to one of my other hypotheses, where I suspected a possible change done during production. Such changes are seldom known to the Average Joe and mistakenly get omitted from advertising literature. However more often than not installation instructions typical will make note of said changes; at least most of the time. There is where the mystery began for me and the reason why I submitted this post. The reality that I could find no reasonable explanation TSB or otherwise added to the mystery. In effect I've stumbled upon a peculiarity that's not well known and surprisingly slipped by a lot of proof readers. That? Or the memo never made it to the right people. Therefore my recommendation for others to examine theirs is valid? Could be a few fellas out there that'd be happy to learn of this oddity? It's rather amazing that this hasn't been brought to the attention of HD HQ, years ago. It's hard to imagine them missing a selling point and or failing to update their catalog all this time; had they known.
