Default Will not fire.

Was riding my 1985 Evo last weekend. I started it, pulled out on highway, gave it a little throttle. The bike acted like I turned the kill switch off. I never use kill switch. I always use ignition switch between tanks. I pushed it out of road, tried to restart it but did not work. Now it will turn over just fine. Just no spark. I pulled fuel line from pit ****, plenty of fuel. Plenty going into carb. Plugs are not wet. Coil pack is less that 2 years old. Inside of rear splash fender I have a ignition relay and a fuse link. I changed the link as that went out about 6 years ago. Still no fire. Bike was running great right up to that moment. What am I missing????? Please help.

if it is the system relay, they go bad also. however, you can use a jump wire in the relay socket to see if it will run, if so, get a new relay. if not, start looking at wiring and then ignition. do not over-look the bar kill switch, i had one to go bad, it is a good idea to cycle it to help keep the contacts from corroding.

There’s no system relay in a carbed model. Check for voltage at the coil.

When they quit like the kill switch had been hit...it's almost always electrical. Quite often, it's a case of a wire came loose somewhere. I was on a cross country run when my '85 quit on me late one night going over the Mississippi River bridge in the Quad-cities. I coasted her to the end of the bridge and got off on the shoulder. Looking around with my mini-maglite, I found a small wire on the coil had slipped out of it's terminal. I carry spare terminals. Held the light with my teeth, replaced the terminal..crimped the new one on good and snug, and got back on the road. 19 yrs since then and it's doing fine.

did you replace the 30 amp breaker? there is also a 15 amp breaker in the ignition circuit that was giving me problems on my 85.

The following link is a way to test your coil, wires and plugs. it's a setup I've used and really pretty simple to perform. First you must determine if you coil has power, 12v. Next you need to make sure that when you hook the momentary switch (Annie) up to your coil that you do it on the ground side not positive feed terminal. Good luck..

For future reference, as a fellow Evo owner, do call into the Evo section, to meet up with fellow bike owners! Best of luck sorting out your current challenge.

One thing you can check, is to take the cover off of your kill switch button on your handle bars. Check to make sure a sodder joint didn't come undone. At the same time you can also check the kill button too to make sure that it works.
