Big Twin terminology goes way back to the Flathead era. Harley always made different size motors. A U/UL/ULH would be considered a Big Twin VS a WL with the 45 cubic inch motor. Knuckles, Pans and Shovels all existed with 45's and K Models and then ironheads.

Back in their day these were all called Big twins. Any big inch displacement engine larger than a Sportster or a k model
