Default Yet another Garage Door opener for the bike

I can't take credit for the general idea of a HiBeam triggered garage door opener, but I did end up designing and making one out of scrap electronic parts and a spare remote control and installed on my RKC.
The general concept is- trigger the remote control by flashing the hi beam.
So, build a circuit that takes +12v from the hi beam indicator bulb, triggers a 'one-shot' (LM555 configured in monostable) timer circuit, which sends a signal via opto-coupler to the door button on my remote, all permanently mounted in the bike.

Here's my circuit diagram:

The three input connections are tapped from the indicator light cluster in the console on the tank.
  • +12V ACCY is tapped from the orange wire.
  • GND is the black wire.
  • Hi Beam is the white wire.

Here is a pic of these 3 connections to the indicator light cluster harness under the tank console, which are soldered then insulated:

Here's a pic of the hand wired circuit board. I've made a couple changes since the pic was taken, but it's still mostly the same.
After the pic was taken, I protected the board with a sleeve of heat shrink tubing.
It gets installed under the seat/ RH side cover area.
Also shown is the LiftMaster board temporarily out of its housing. I connected the red and black wires to the 'door-open' pushbutton switch.
Since this photo was taken, I made the improvement of putting the opto-isolator (Q2 in the diagram above) right on the LiftMaster board.

Here's a pic of the console back on the tank, the heat shrink wrapped circuit board, and the remote ready to be installed under the side cover.

And here it's all installed. Shrink wrapped board is strapped to an existing harness, and the LiftMaster remote is velcro'd to the side of the ABS hydraulic module.
I put it there so that the RF signal from the remote would easily transmit thru the plastic side cover, rather than going thru something metal like the headlight housing.
All wiring is zip-tied or taped in place so that vibration can't cause wiring to rub thru on its insulation.

Anyway, it was a couple evening's work to design build and install it all. I know I could have just bought one commercially for a couple hundred CDN (or more) but that would be boring. I had all these parts laying around from other projects and hobby stuff.
And it works great. Just flash the high beams going in or out of the garage and it triggers the door. Up, stop or down.

Happy to answer any questions if anyone wants to build one.

Also on a side note, happy that I got to do a nearly 200 mile drive today since the weather finally was great.

Don

Very cool project! I will be building mine soon. Thanks for engineering the circuit!

Very clever but I just hung a small clicker purchased from Amazon on my handlebars. It just seemed so much easier! 😀

My solution is much more low tech. I pull up to the garage door, my wife hears me and pushes the button near the door going into the house.
