Default Help. Tensioner Problems!

Please see attached. This is the 2nd one where the wall has separated while trying to release it back on the chain. Not being rough at all. Using a small nut driver to pull back on the spring. Bad idea apparently as the pad post is barely secured to the frame. How is that supposed to last in use? Is the scissor type install tool REALLY that safe to use? Is there another way I'm missing? These tensioners were from J&P and Kirk. Is the OEM made better? Thank you for any support you can give. Take care.

IIRC you need to remove the cams to replace the tensioner.. You still have one in the cam plate.

It was removed. I was replacing the pin holding it before releasing the tensioner.

I only use oem tensioner bodies. Also, no need to remove the cams to R&R the rear one using the correct tool. A machinist friend made me this one. His contact info is in the comments section. Be advised, this tool is the only one that truly works unlike the Chinese copies out there.

You might consider a Baker Manual Tensioner. I have that on my Ultra. Check it out: https://bakerdrivetrain.com/search?q=manual+tensioner

The OP is talking about the cam chain tensioners, not the primary chain tensioner.

I had no idea China was making knock-off tensioners.
