Exclamation Fuel gauge problems

Hi, I have a fuel gage that never reads over 3/4 of a tank. This is a problem for me because I do a lot of long distance riding in places where gas stations are at times scarce. I suspect that there is a pinhole in a float inside the gas tank as the gauge is just an electrical component that is connected to the wiring harness. Is it possible to replace the float? And if so how would one attack the problem. I figure if the gauge was bad it would just not work at all. Help and advice would be appreciated. Oh, my bad the bike is a 2000 Fatboy.

I would suspect an issue with the fuel sending unit , friend had the same problem , easy to pull and inspect . You would have to purchase the entire unit as they don't just sell the float , if that's that issue .

See part #11 .

Fuel gauges are not that accurate. Figure out your mpg, then watch your odometer. Does your fuel gauge read empty OK? You can bend the float arm to get it to read full if you want. A bit of work, and the odometer is more accurate anyway.

Thank you for your help. I am pretty sure that you are correct. It can only be that or the float.

I run an app called Simply Auto. I started using on my Sportster. Tracked a number of tanks of fuel, trips, around town, etc. Figured what my mileage was, and used odometer as fuel gage. Still do that today on my 2021 Street Glide. I never trust the fuel gage, and always rely on my odometer.
