Default Portable jump starter swolen

I carry a jump starter in my saddle bag and I take it out a couple times a year to check the charge and this weekend I noticed that the case was starting to swell up.
It uses lithium batteries and I don't need this thing to catch on fire in the middle of the night, so off to the dump it goes.

It contains a soft foil lithium polymer battery that has been over discharged or overcharged or sat in very high heat.

The do puff up and then they should be treated as explosive.

I would fully discharge it to zero volts and then toss it. Do not discard it with a charge as it can be lethal for refuge collection or land fill.

The problem is it doesn't matter who the manufacturer is be NoCo, Anti gravity or any other as the lithium battery inside comes from a very small source of suppliers. What that means is switching to a different make doesn't mean it will necessarily have a better battery inside.

Here is an example of a battery you will find inside -
Amazon Amazon

The numbers on the side of the pack suggest it is good to supply 400 Amps.

It's a "Bully Pro" that I've had for about 6 years, don't remember where I got it.
I will defiantly discharge it before I take it to the dump (they have an area just for batteries).

Well, it does to me, and maybe the mfg. If I were making and selling them, I'd want to know all issues about my product.

It may just be one of only, or it may be a real issue, and I'd still have my product being made that nobody will buy, if there is a recall on them.

I'm not a battery guru, just a possible purchaser one day.

I had one swell up and the case split open. This happen after the warranty expired. The company told me to discard and offer me a discount for a new one. I did not take them up on the offer and went with another brand. So far no problems, but now I always take it out and look at it. Like what "Andy from Sandy" stated, all these companies gets their supplies from a limited supplier, so mentioning the company does not matter.

Let me try and restate what I am trying to convey. See all of these 3S packs here -
Amazon.co.uk : 3s 5200mah lipo Amazon.co.uk : 3s 5200mah lipo

There might only be 2 or 3 actual lipo cell manufacturers involved.

So a jump starter company has a pack that puffs up so they decide to switch to something else. They wouldn't perhaps know if the new battery supplier wasn't getting cells from the same place as the previous. It might also be that a jump starter company doesn't put all the eggs in one basket and gets batteries from a few suppliers. It is the same problem in that can't be sure where the actual cells are coming from.

So if I tell you who I bought my Jump Starter from it isn't any real help as the next one you choose could well be using the same cells and a prospect of it suffering any similar fate.

Interesting that no one says they use them? Just buy and keep until this happens? Why?

These lithium cells are not completely stable when kept fully charged at 4.2 volts per cell and then taken to high temperatures.

People buy them just in case and some have said they have started several bikes but not needed to use it on their own bike. An insurance policy, just in case.

In my RC days we would always reduce the charge on LiPo batteries to around 50% when not in use which would then render them useless for jump start use.
