silicone too soft??????
why not ask caterpillar, they use a ton of them and that is in the industrial environment
viton is in the same class as buna-n
i run the collapsible tubes and the silicone makes assy wayyyy easier even if you do not own the plies, nary an issue from 2001 till now.

So you haven't replaced the silicon O rings in 23 years and still good?
James tried making intake manifold seals for HD out of silicon. Nice and soft. I bought a 10 pack. Over time they'd ooze into the intake.. I'd be careful on the silicone O ring choice.. Fit would have to be good. Place of concern would be the middle O ring.
Viton is the available in the same hardness as Buna but good to 400F. HD used them on the top for TC then everywhere on the new M8s.
The bottom tube rings I paid a fortune for are not round but an "H" profile. First time I ever got those. Kinda tricky to install. I had to put them on the tube and use a dental pick to start the bottom edge into the lifter block.
Personally I've use the round O ring and never had an issue with the lower. I've had pushrod covers leak 2 times.. The first was when I tossed a little fork oil into the motor oil to seal evo rocker boxes. One of the middle pushrod O rings swelled up and started to leak.. It was a motor that I didn't assemble. The other was when I installed a cover clip against the head and not the upper pushrod. Upper one leaked.
Yeah, I've never used anything other than round profile o rings. And I really can't recall having tubes leak in the past 4 bikes, or 35 years really. But then again, I can forget what I'm doing while I'm doing it! These spapped in and there was some squish from the clips so I guess time will tell.
An in stock $27 anything that I NEED to get anything up and running is a no brainer

Well like I said, I bit the bullet because I wanted that bike off my lift. But knowing I could get a set online for less than half of that irritated me. Plus the attitude of the Parts dude. There was nobody else in there.

Thanks but I'm not sure I want any more right now. Guess they're more of a squared (?) "X" profile really and since it's the first time I've ever used them I'll wait to see how they perform.
yep quad rings can get pricey. unless the assy calls for them, o-rings will work.
that said, if you find backup rings with the o-ring make sure you use them or the o-ring is subject to early failure.
they usually go on the low pressure side of the o-ring and control squish.
