Default Hunting for a bolt!

Or at least, the right size of one. I have lkooked up the part number on the parts diagram, and it is 10200242
It's the bolts that hold the exhaust bracket onto the bar that supports the silencers.

I am fitting a set of pipes intended for a later model Sportster to my 2009, as the balance pipe/bracket has developed a crack. I have the bracket and the support piece, plus a pair of NOS pipes that were stupidly cheap.

Only problem is, I don;t have the bolts which hold the bracket to the silencer supports. Look to be 5/16, but I don;t know the thread pitch and don;t have any imperial thread gauges. Mine are all metric. Not found a UK source for the genuine parts ( not that I really want to go that route with bolts..)and the only bolts I have found in my parts bucket are ellen bolts with a far too small key. Not going to take the torque, and besides, they are not the sort of quality I want to hold the entire weight of hte exhaust system up with.

Anyone know the correct sizr bolts here?

thanks for the link...but that's in Germany not UK. 15Euro postage....on a 2Euro bolt. Ouch!
Underneath though, in 'customers also bought' it has "Screw 5/16"-18 x 1" UNC Hex Head Grade 5 "
Wonder if that is the same thread. Inch long seems about right, and I measured it at around 7.8mm...or 0.3 inches, so I am sure it's 5/16.
If nothing else comes up, I might give that a go.

I found this hardware list which gives a different dimension. Surprisingly the HD SIP site lists the screw in the exhaust parts but doesn't show it in the hardware list.

If you google HD 10200242 you might find it in the UK

Hardware List: Description Part No. Description Part No | PDF | Screw | Joining

Applied a bit of lateral thinking!

I took a look through the hardware list, and while the part I wanted isn;t listed...4017 is listed, and is the thread I think I need based on my measurements. That's the bolt that holds the silencers to the mount.
I got 4 of those on the bike!
So I whipped one off and tried it. Thread is perfect and goes in a treat. Now I just need to go find some more that size, and E-Bay is full of bolts and fasteners when you know what you want.
Got there in the end thanks to the hardware list

5/16 18 x 1 should be a common size available most anywhere ... Am I missing something?

No. My problem was more in finding out if that WAS the size, as the HD part number just didn;t give me that. For some reason, that part is not lisxted in the hardware section on the parts catalogue. So I was left with either paying a load of cash for a genuine bolt ( mostly postage...) or finding out the correct size.
Once I knew that...actually finding a bolt is easy and cheap.

Local hardware shops in the UK simply do not stock imperial sized bolts, so going shopping in a physical store is a non starter too. Just metric hardware. Ironic really, as we invented the system.....but UK retailers are metric.

But I am all sorted now.
