It only happens at a Light or when Stopped?
How are the seals on throttle body?
At idle there is less fuel and lack of sealing could reduce it more.
How is the inside of carb?
Has anybody cleaned the carb?

So I am the one to catch it. But go ahead call me out. But either way, no fuel filter. Maybe you could have caught that, if not trying to prove me wrong on dumb typos.

End the lesson.

Carbed bikes don't have filters?

Just giving him a little lesson on bikes. So can we focus on this guys bike?

Chances are, not positive if fuel related you would notice the RPMs dip or act funny if starving for fuel. Sounds like the bike just dies, and can't be restarted for awhile. So I am thinking electical. Sine he has lights, I am thinking not the main breaker.

He could carry a plug with him, simply unplug a boot, stick the spare plug in, to check for spark. He has replaced the coil. Could be a sensor or ignition module. Kinda doubt loose wire cause it starts up eventually.

I am assuming bike cranks over, but does not start, since he mentioned spark plug wrench.

To solve the fuel filter mystery for those who do not work on Sportsters; your attention is invited to the diagram below.

Prior to fuel injection, the filter screen is on the petcock, located in the fuel tank.

They do get clogged with rust, tank coating, etc and can stop/slow down fuel flow.

It may be worthwhile for the OP to drain/suction the gas out of the gas tank, remove the tank, remove the petcock and inspect the filter screen.

OP, if you are going to do this, get a HD Service Manual for your bike, you can thank me later.

They can still be purchased at the dealer Ref: 24
62166-81A
FILTER FUEL VALVE
Price: $16.33

Lesson completed, there will be a test later - maybe.
NOTE:
The above information, while credible, is worth what you paid for it and should not be considered gospel.
Do due diligence, research and have a H-D Field Service Manual before working on your bike.
You will probably have many opinions and suggestions presented; make sure you research the person providing the helpful information as there are some who provide good information that is useful and some who speak out of other orifices with gibberish. You will figure out this quickly.

On a 1999 sporty I had a while back,,,, I had put a new tank on it.. Bike ran great for a while,, Then all of a sudden I could only go 20 or 30 miles and it would die, after waiting 10 minutes or so it would start back up and run fine, for another 20 or so miles... Ended up that tank liner had came loose and was blocking the petcock filter..

A leaf or other flakey impurities in the tank will can settle towards the filter when the bike stops moving cutting off flow to the FUEL FILTER (Roundie McRoundround). But a clogged vent will also do it. will have fuel pressure overcome the vacuum while moving as the fuel will off gas and keep a positive pressure until the agitation stops. My WR450F did thiw with a stubby fuel cap bent. The stupid tip over BB in the tip of teh stubby hose got dirty and stuck in the closed position. (Rip and toss fixed it right then and there)

Carbed bikes do not have a fuel filter. They do have a screen , part of the petcock. But if the bike is not starving for fuel at speed, than I doubt it is starving at idle.

Also if the screen was dirty, it would not account for the bike starting in 20 minutes.

He also said he was getting gas

The 20 minute wait, makes me wonder if electronic device, that is cooling down and the starting..
