My speedo on my 1996 Dyna died so I put on a used one from a 2000 Sportster I had. Put on a new Deutsch 12 pin connector, making sure all the wiring matched up. Breadboarded a contraption on my bench to add 20K miles to the odometer so it matches what I had. Looks good, works good. Added the tach as well.
Now all I need is an in-line calibrator to make the speed correction. The Dakota SIM-1 looks great, small and super easy to use at about $150.
There is also another one sold under various names such as V-Factor and others. It is half the price, and assume does the same job.
Issue is, the SIM-1 looks weather tight, but the other one does not, at least not in the stock photos.
I have installed the SIM 1 on two bikes of mine so far, an 02 Heritage and just this past Friday on my 1995 Dyna, both bikes had modified final drives. Super easy to set up with a GPS and I have not had any problems with reliability. The SIM 1 looks weather tight enough for under the seat of the Dyna. Since you don't need to use it after the initial setup you could always tywrap a small parts bag over the contraller for extra protection.
I thought about the plastic bag protector for the calibrator, but then we are into the area of trapping moisture in. Never really bought into that idea.
