Just picked up a Garmin Xt3 (6") ..And WOW...(even though its still expensive) I think its much better then the 2024 HD GPS and iPhone GPS (That constituently over heats and drops connectivity)
Easier to manipulate, Quicker response (2x as fast than the XT2). Completely a Niche GPS that offers profiles and some pretty good features (Lean angles, etc etc)
Still NO tethering, so just look for a 1" circumference Metal lanyard\tether for phones and epoxy if that concerns you
The AMps\cradle and ball mount have more plastic then the previous XT2. And the mounting cradle (YOU DONT HAVE TO USE THE NEW ONE IF YOU HAVE THE OLDER ONE) is a Screw in to the Amps backplate rather than a bolt through the Amps Back plate. Same Power cable as Xt2.
I have not had any rebooting issues during Treads cloud sync while driving. In fact it works flawless with the Bluetooth architecture and how it allows the phone to do the connectivity..
However the software still sucks! since we all have been programmed to save Tracks in previous programs, and lets just say Treads is more of a point to point and shaping tool to allow Xt3 to do the processing based off your profile. Still hate that I can't EASILY print out turn by turn etc etc...
BTW< I still love using maps. Whenever I pull out a map at a ferry dock or a stop..folks seem to offer suggestions on places to visit on the area and easy to show me where they are....And at least I haven't been routed to the ocean..just yet..LOL
Good to hear the XT3 is working out. Sounds like they finally fixed the lag. Sucks about the tethering and the cheap plastic cradle though. And yeah, the software is always the weak link with Garmin. Maps are still king for the social aspect, you're dead right about that.

I get it. Gets harder to keep up with all the changes.
Good idea though. Sometimes you just gotta shut it off and enjoy the ride. That's what it's all about.
