My nephew lives in Duluth. He came to visit me after Sturgis this year and I noticed his exhaust clamps were severely rusty and there was corrosion on parts of the engine and transmission. He has a 07 SE Road King. I was amazed at the appearance just from ridingon the wet roadsafter the winter came to an end.
Salt and salt dust ( salt ground up byheavy traffic )will kill any metal. I don't mind riding in the winter but I usually won't ride until after a good rain washes the salt off of the road.
Working for the county road department we pressure wash all of our equipment after asnow. It helps some but you can still see damage in time.
dude, you live in the north east, ever look at the rust and damage on cars caused by road salt? i'm sure it's worse for a bike. at least cars are engineered to with stand harsh enviroments [ so they say anyway, lol]. i think your just asking for trouble down the road. just my opinion
All of the above plus--Having had a few buddies who like to go as far into winter as possible, or be the 1st out in the spring, I can tell you that the salt will kick the crap outta ur electrical system in no time. Extremely hard on wiring harnesses.
My recommendation if you love your Harley is to get something else to ride in the winter that won't break your heart when it becomes rusty. I have four BMWs and a Road King, and I put everything except for a K75RT (full fairing) away for the winter. The K75RT is showing corrosion in a number of places from being run in the salt, even though it lives in a warm, dry garage and I wash it weekly when I run it.
I would not want to see the sort of cosmetic deterioration on my Road King that I'm seeing on the BMW.
