General Topics/Tech TipsDiscussion on break in periods, rider comfort, seats and pad suggestions. Tech tips as they become available will be posted here.
I purchased my 2004 Wide Glide in Sept. 2007 with 610 miles on it. Since that time I have ridden it for about 3100 more miles. The last few times I took her out I heard a chirpping sound (sounds like it swallowed a baby chick) and can't distinguish where it's comming from. Doesn't make the sound at idle, usually on acceleration and then again not all the time. Could it be exhaust leak or internal engine problem. Haven't taken to shop yet. Hope someone here can help and save the cost of diagnostic time at the dealership.
You say that at idle the bike doesn't make this sound but, does the bike do the sound when you hold the clutch while you are riding? I would try to discover if this sound comes from brakes, pulley, etc putting the bike on a stand and with the motor stopped, moving the wheels to see if the sound appears.
If it sounds like an old VW beetle, it could be the baffles in your mufflers. I notice it more on bridges and in tunnels where the sound is deflected back. Do like others suggest and check drive belt and primary chain tension first.
Clean & check the drive belt, possibly stretched from break-in from new. OE exhast also has a small cross over tube by the trans, that has a gasket that is known to go bad & create a squeak. Hit the rear muffler with your hand or rubber mallet, and it will ussually duplicte the noise without the bike running. Took me a long time to find that one.
i had a squeak that turned out to be the slip on exhast ,rear support ,where it goes through that little piece of rubber. as the engine moved the exhaust moved with it, rubbing back and forth on that little piece of rubber. a little adjustment and a little dry graphite and no more squeak. good luck tracking yours down.
The "bird chirp" I have heard this on quite a few times. Usually, but not always, it was just the belt. It may be too loose. HD mechs use a spring gauge to see how much it deflects in inchs versus the specified spring tension. It's a pretty easy fix if that's what it is.
