My low gas light comes on after about 90 miles-I still have 3 gallons of gas left. I have an 05 Fat Boy. Took in the shop and the problem was still there. Anyone have any ideals??
Service tech said the arm was bent. He told me that about 60% of the bikes he sees come from with the factory with the bent arm.
Anyhow, he tested by draining and filling the tank to be sure. I even got to watch from the service counter. Its only been 1 tank since, but it was on for the first one.
I have an 05 FatBoy also and had a similiar problem with the float arm sticking and causing false readings. Service manager said that they spray the inside of the tank with a rust inhibitor and it creates little jagged spikes on the insde of the tank and the float assembly arm has to be bent enough so it doesn't catch on them. I let him bend it since it was under warranty. It has worked properly ever since. He also said that they were having problems with the units themselves just not working right.. It's still under warranty right, tell them to fix it.
Yep, same problem here on my 02 Heritage. Fuel gauge hasn't worked properly from day 1. Low fuel light comes on between 90-100 miles on the odometer...when I fill it up, I put in 3+ gallons...wtf?!? I've had it checked numerous times...even went so far as to replace it with the LED gauge (cuz I thought it was cool looking) but I ended up having the stock gauge put back on cuz the LED was too difficult to read in the daylight and it was wiggin' out worse than the stock gauge. So...I'm back to the stock gauge and the problem still exists. I gave up trying to get it fixed...I just go by my odometer reading.
Mine did work perfectly for 2 tanks of gas after being fixed. Now its back to low fuel light at 120 miles and only taking 3 gallons to fill.
I'm mostly OK with it, but I'd like it to work. At least I know what it means. I was afraid that it might not come on until after I was OUT of gas after they fixed it.
Dealer called to check on it, and said that they will fix it any time I want to bring it by.
At least customer service has been awsome from this dealer! McGuire's Walnut Creek CA.
Very few things lie more often or outrageously than a Harley fuel gauge.
On my 03 carbed FLSTC, I can fill that b1tch up until fuel dribbles out the overflow. I can then ride for 100 miles and the gauge will still show 3/4 of a tank. Then it shifts into free fall and you can literally watch the needle drop.
As long as she gets 40 plus mpg I don't care what the gauge says. I have a watch and the odo works.
