I have a flat profile chrome battery cover that I'd like to paint wrinkle black. However, I'd like to leave a small area of the chrome in the shape of a Maltese or Iron Cross for some flair. I'm trying to figure out a way to block off that cross shape on the cover so I can sand and paint around it, therefore leaving a chrome cross when I'm done. I thought about cutting an outline of it using a bunch of that blue painters tape, but, I'm not sure if that's the best way to go. Any suggestions?
I used to own a glass sandblaster, and I would buy a heavy rubber mating with a self adhesive glue line on the back. I had a plotter that would cut whatever shape I wanted, then I would stick the protective mat onto the glass, and sandblast the rest away. Then I could paint the product, pull away the mat, and it would be a perfect job.
If you know anyone in the sign business they will most likely have blasting mask in stock, or will be able to tell you where to get it. Or you can look up glass sandblasting and get it blasted. It's cheap, and you will get a very sharp defined image.
