Get it powdercoated. More durable than paint.

I painted the horn cover and battery band with flat black wrinkle finish paint. After removing the parts from the bike, I scuffed the original finish with a scothbrite nylon pad, then sprayed with 2 coats of paint, then re-installed.
The paint has lasted for 3 years now and no sign of flaking or chipping.

Check on Dupli Color's new see through colors. I know they have them in 'black chrme'. It has a prep spray that goes on first. Guys are painting car wheels with this stuff.

Nothing wrong with powder coating for sure.

I’ve rough up some chrome items, cleaned with alcohol,
rattled canned primer, and the sprayed the black.
No problems with any of them.
Try it, what do you have to loose?

What these guys have said, sand and prime. But use an etching primer. It's designed to be sprayed onto bare metal. It has an acid that will better adhere to the surface. Powder coat is pretty cheap though, in case you hadn't considered it.

On something like an engine guard that has a high probablility of getting hit by stuff (rocks, your feet, the ground) I would go with powdercoat over paint.

I've painted lots of chrome parts with no problems at all. They have held up great and I live down a mile of gravel road. Like stated above, I sanded the parts and then used a self etching primer from a rattle can and the painted and clear coated from rattle cans too. Its way cheaper than powder coating. And if you ever do get a chip in it, just touch it up.
