...the headlight and controls on my 1 week old '05 Road King Classic are torn off in preparation for a new set of Wild 1 Chubby handlebars (WO508's). I've never done this before so for me it's uncharted territory. All I have left to do is remove the rest of the controls from the bars and change them out. However, the Chubbies run the wiring internally so I'll have to remove all the wiring from the controls and plugs, fish it through the bars and reconnect/solder everything up, then reassemble the headlight and controls. Whew, what a job?!! Especially for someone who has never done anything like this. I'm just concerned that I get everything reconnected correctly. Once I do I'll be home free and that will be the last major thing I'll do to the bike. Everything else is just minor cosmetic stuff. Wish me luck. I'd welcome any recommendations. Thanks.[&:]
You can do it. Do one wire at a time use shrink tube on the solder joints. I like to stagger my splices so you don't have a big wad of splices in one spot and I usually like to cover all the wires after splicing with a shrink tube as well. Boy is it going to look good and I think you will love the bars.

yep, 1 wire at a time, and make sure you insulate them real good with the shrink tubing, or something along those lines; when you solder, make sure to get the wire hot enough to melt the solder, not the tip of your soldering gun melting the solder, but not too hot on the wire, as you can damage the insulation elsewhere from the heat
Get a PIN PULLER and pull the pins from the plug...then you don't have to solder or cut anything. I just did the Wild 1's on my ride, and I did it the hard way, I cut all the wires and soldered them back. I looked at the plug, but couldn't see a way to pull the pins. Talking to a buddy last night, you can buy a "pin puller" and you are set.
It would have been MUCH quicker that way.
TNW, if you don't do it that way, I used Shrink Wrap, there is really is no better way.
If you don't have a one piece clamp, you might want to get one now, the Wild 1 bars recommend them.
Put Chubby low drags on my FXST. If you don't need longer wires don't cut them . Just some place for trouble. Get a small screw driver such as for eye glasses and pich the connections . Mine were under the tank. GET THE SERVICE MANUAL.
no solder. do what pilot recomended go to local auto store and buy pin seperater (couple bucks) most auto stores should have them. Great little tool to have around, makes wireing jobs nice and clean. then you can use the stock connector and have no connection problems.

This is correct if the wires are long enough, be sure they are by full turn to stop check, left and right. You don't want any pull or binding of the wires.

I definitely agree with Mac (he refreshed my memory of those days working in the shop) - any time you can pull the pins out, keeping the original connectors (undamaged), do that. If you don't have the pin removal tool, you can use what we referred to as a "dental tool". This was a tool about 8" long with an "L" at one end & straight at the other end, VERY pointy (from any auto store also) - if that's not available, you can also use a small safety pin. Just go into the side of the connector where the wires enter from, and if you look (if possible) you will see 1 or 2 tabs sticking out from the brass pin that holds it securely in the connector - you just push these back and keep a little pressure on the wire until it pops out. Be careful not to use too big a safety pin so you don't damage the connector. If you push these tabs back too far, all you have to do is push them back out once you have them apart. Also, make certain, BEFORE you pull the wires, that you either have a schematic available or you have drawn your own picture so you get the wires back in the correct positions. Oh, and the pin puller tools are available in different sizes, be sure to get the right size, or you get one with swapable tips.
