Default really newb question.

Hoping someone can help me out with this one. This is my first Harley and I really dont know much about bikes.
I have an 86' 883 Sportster. I changed the oil this weekend. I was told to drain the oil from the feed line, wich is really really hard on this bike. Its on the right side underneath and the fitting it is clamped to is a 90 degree bend, straight up of course. I was told by a guy Im in a band with that on a Harley like mine, I should be able to drain the oil from the tranny plug because the tranny uses the same oil? That sounds retarded to me but is it true? If so it would be so much easier to drain my oil. This is and 1986 evo engine. 4 speed. Also if this is the only way to drain the oil, how does someone else do it that might be easier? Getting the hose off was easy, getting it back on was a bitch.

Relax, your friend gave you wrong info, your bike needs specific techniques to change oil. Anyways, what I suggest is that you post your location on this site and get a new freind who can help you out, or go to your local dealer, and ask if they have a can start you in the right direction.

Do not try to learn on your bike! Every new guy over torques the aluminum, trys to "fix" their bike and ends up in trouble.

Don't take this the wrong way, but a Harley is sensitive and needs a gentle touch. It's soft, (aluminum) and a virgin wrench guy can push the bolts too much, or blow the aluminum body before it's time.

See if you can get a service manual. This should cover about anything you would need to know. specs/capacities, torque values, drain and fill plug locations, etc. you get the picture. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the bike.

LOL, I knew the guy didnt have a clue what he was talking about. He rides a Kawisucky Valcry. Nearest dealer is about 2 hours from me since I live in the sticks so I'll have to wait. I am a do it yourself kind of guy, but at the same time I dont wanna screw anything up. Thats why I asked on here first. I'm in the process of trying to get a manuel. I'm sure there is an easier way to change the oil, and I need to change the tranny fluid too. Thanks for the advise. The bike runs great and if it aint broke, I wont fix it.
