No special way... I change the oil on my 08 dyna.. you do have to make sure which plug you're pulling to drain, and make sure what oil you're putting back in what hole....

but there's nothing special about it that I've found. Do you know what plug he pulled to drain the engine with? What oil did he put back in?

Like archergodwin said its nothing special but could be easy to drain the wrong hole.

You have 3 drains for a fluid change.

Cavitation ?? The only thing I've ever heard doing that is a prop of a boat.

Procedure is pretty simple, drain oil, refill. No special procedure.

Now if your buddy put the oil in the correct hole, I'm calling BS on this dealer. I've been changing oil in Harley's for years, and I have never heard that term EVER applied to a bike.

Question, what made your buddy take the scoot to the dealer?? Knowing what the problem is, may help us figure out what went wrong.

In the end, I'd tell your buddy to load his scoot up and take it to another dealer. Sounds like someone doesn't want to do warranty work, and is trying to blame whatever mechanical problem he's having on him.

Respects,
Ed

It would be interesting to know what engine damage was caused, especially since it was only $600.
Just a regular service at a Harley dealer is about half that.

I would think any real engine damage would surely cost more than that, right? Or am I just missing something?

Yeah, the 'cavitation' word caught my attention as well. I can see saying that if you starved the oil pump somehow... it would then 'cavitate', but that would be the least of your worries right about then...

However like RollaMo stated, what occured that caused you (your buddy) to take the bike into the shop?

Possible air lock if he did not add oil to the new filter to prime it before installing it?

How do you prime an oil filter thats mounted horizontal ? Sounds like it might get messy when you go to spin it on.

If the oil pump sucks air instead of oil, that is referred to as "cavitation." Some say this can result if the new oil filter is not pre-loaded with oil before being put on.

well the filter shouldn't be filled to the brim and the bike is leaning. What's a little oil going to do if it spills? nothing just wipe it up.
