Default Removing timing cover

I bought some chrome goodies for my 98 decker and one thing was a timing cover which I thought just bolted on. It looks like the stock one has rivets in it though. Does a person just drill those out and if so, can you then put screws/bolts back in there to put the new cover on?
Thanks...

do not know what a 98 decker is??
1-the rivets are called blind rivets because they are closed on the other side.
2-yes, you can drill them out..caution because about 5 turns of the drill is all you need to remove heads on rivets
3-most bikes have a steel plate behind that V2 aluminum cover..that aluminum cover is what is held with the rivets...once you remove the thin aluminum cover you should see two phillips screws..this two screws remove/hold the steel plate
4-your cover probably came with nice chrome screws??? and these would screw into the posts that the two phillips screws attached to....if not you will re-use the two phillips untill you find some nice ones.
5-if your rivets are verticle one top / one bottom ..you will find phillips screws horizontal..one left and one right under the thin aluminum cover...in this case your purchased cover should have holes one left and one right

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info. I am still getting to know the Harley terminology so someone I work with said when they saw my bike "nice decker" so I just assumed that's what they were called. It's a 98 FLHTC Classic.

Thanks again!

your welcome,
if you plan on working on the bike yourself consider ordering a service manual..it will pay for itself after just one service..the manual and this forum should keep you on the road and some money in your pocket...may wish to get a parts manual also..but the service manual from harley is almost a requirement.
consider use of harley davidson internet sales stores services:
like chicago harley davidson, zanottis or surdyke harley davidson
20% off msrp and NO tax..

Default Worked..

Hey IM. Thanks again for the info. Just got finished replacing the cover and it went exactly as you said. I do usually buy a manual whenever I get a vehicle so that is the next thing on the list (as well as a couple shiny screws for the new cover).
Cheers!
