look into this. 99.9 % of the time it's just rider error. Even if the spring is broken or lost if you properly engage the kickstand it will lock in position. The only time I park in gear is on a hill if the engine wants to decompress & chug backwards. If the top bolt comes lose & the locking tab doesn't engage you should catch that as you lower the bike onto to stand. Been riding since '64 & never just had a bike fall over.
I see people just kick it out and lean it and get off, and down it goes. Just leave your foot on the stand until it's all the way over and I bet it doesn't fall again. I know what I speak of!
long story short, got up to a guy that ran me and misses off of the road. he was stopped at a red light. I had the kicked stand down with bike moving and dismounted with it sliding to a stop on its stand, as i was try to pull him threw his window. it slide about a foot and misses was more pissed at me for getting off the bike before it stopped moving, then the guy that ran us off the road. if the stand is not all the way forward the bike will not lean as hard just a fyi for the next time.

If you really did reach into his car, you are lucky he didn`t take you for a ride...Because he probably had no idea who the hell you were.

your right the design of the stand works well, but if you manufacture crappy springs it will not stay up.
You're the only person I've 'personally' heard of with so much spring trouble on the kickstand. Maybe you're not putting it on correctly? Are you buying H-D springs or aftermarket? It just sounds to me like you need to check your work first, before generalizing that all kickstand springs are crap.
My spring is generally the first point of contact when I high center going over speed bumps or those silly angle curbs. But after 7 years, I have only had to replace it once. And the spring's only function is to keep the jiffy stand retracted and out of the way when riding.
If the Jiffy Stand is correctly extended and mounted tight there is nothing short of pushing the bike over - away - from the jiffy stand that will tip it over. Of course if its a really hot day, I would not park on asphalt - asphalt failure will bite you in the behind
